I welcome my first, and perhaps only, post in my third semester. Just past our midsemesters, this is the time to throw caution to the winds and pull up our oily noses from the book spines. Ours is a new institute, IISER Kolkata. So any semblance of Campus life is sniggered upon the puritans like me who prohibit any college spirit to take over our eager young minds. Please note that 'spirit' is an intended pun, and this tidal of IISERism sweeping a section of the students is particularly encourageable. I mean all you people do have my blessings but this quest to prove that IISER is in someway that to science what IITs are to the technical field escapes my empathy. But the fact is that we do have classy teachers, professors who have THE factor known to lesser mortals as "mind-numbing sense of wicked humor", and that our institute has a lot of budget to cater to student comfort is irrelevant. Why cant we wait and see if the country recognises our first, or second batch of students to be the brightest youngs minds in science. We have a lot to discuss through, i think. I mean do we excel at studies so much that we deserve to be called hi-fi names? Nope. We sit up late at night to play Counter Strike, not to indulge in subtle points of game theory. We dont have that many clubs, and we think we really lap up the academic points in the last week before exams.
Man by his very own nature is self-delusional. We IISERians, in search of a better term, want to be known all across the country, very possible even the globe as a distinctive college. So we should build up our own brand of activities, our own style and methodology of doing things.
IISER has not gone anyplace, not yet. But it does have that potential, it really does. The students are backed up by good service in the hostel and the mess and soldered to a good environment.
Lets be proud of things which really exist, not which we think do!
